Music Philosophy
In the Classroom
Music is an amazing way for students to connect to other students who they may not interact with otherwise. Music ensembles consist of every grade level in the school. Senior choir students get to interact with younger students and can help tutor and mentor their fellow classmates. Music also introduces students to a variety of genres and cultures ranging from baroque pieces to spirituals and even giving a different perspective on pop music. As an educator I believe its important for directors to talk and explain to the students what they are singing about, the history of a piece, when was it composed, how is the music affected by the time period? These are all musical questions that also dive into history and helps students connect and understand the piece so they can perform it musically and convey the meaning of the piece in the style it was meant to preformed. Music can also teach a new level of discipline. For example, in rehearsal blending in a musical ensemble requires you to always be listening and always having your eyes on the director so you never miss an entrance or a cutoff. It requires a lot of attention and focus not only of what you’re doing but what others around you are doing. In all ensembles you must know what the other sections are doing just as well as you know your own part. Not to mention practicing outside of the classroom every week, improving every day is a lot of commitment and shows a real desire for musical knowledge.
